KOLKATA: Mohammedan Sporting Club trounced Purbo Medinipur Fighters 4-1 in their Zee Bangla Football League (U-19) encounter on Tuesday Mohun Bagan Ground.
After a bright start, Mohammedan opened the scoring in the 6th minute. From Mainak Dey’s right wing cross, Surajuddin Munshi rose highest at the far post to power a header beyond Medinipur goalkeeper.
Having taken the lead, Mohammedan SC got a much needed confidence boost and they increased their pressure up front dominating the game entirely. Despite creating numerous scoring opportunities it was lack of finishing that saw first-half ended 1-0.
As the score reflects, Medinipur were no match for the Young Panthers in the second stanza.
In the 42nd minute, Surajuddin turned provider as he played a great pass to Mohammad Sumit, who needed no second invitations as he sent it beyond the keeper’s right hand to double the lead.
Mohammedan could have gone further ahead in the 46th minute. Uttam Mitra took on the Medinipur defenders and shot with his left and while the goalkeeper made a save, he couldn’t hold on to the ball and Sovan Sen pounced, but the winger was adjudged to have been in an offside position.
However, there was no denying Young Panthers a third in the 48th minute when Sovan crossed for Sanjib Ghosh, who showed composure to beat the defender and fire home.
Then Sanjib fired the final nail in the coffin in the 56th minute after a cross from Uttam.
Nonetheless, Medinipur did not go down without a fight as Firdous Rahman pulled a goal back in the 58th minute.
Mohammedan, who now have 6 points from 3 matches, will take on Birbhum Nobles in their last Group A match on June 15, 2019.
