KOLKATA: Former national players came forward to play a charity match at Mohammedan Sporting Ground on Wednesday afternoon to help former Black Panthers skipper Dhanarajan Radhakrishnan’s family.
Dhanarajan, the most successful Mohammedan Sporting captain of the past decade, died of a sudden cardiac arrest on December 29, 2019 while playing in an All India Sevens tournament at Malappuram, Kerala.
Player’s Forum along with Indian Football Association (IFA) and Income Tax Recreation Club organised the match with will all profits from the match went to Dhanarajan’s family.
Dipendu Biswas, Jose Ramirez Barreto, Arnab Mondal, Mehtab Hossain, Rahim Nabi, Debabrata Roy, Denson Devadas, Lalkamal Bhowmick, Kinshuk Debnath and several other former national players took the field for this noble cause.
Income Tax Recreation Club won the match on penalties after scores were locked 2-2 at the end of regulation time. Denson and Biswajit Biswas were on target for Income Tax Recreation Club while Mehtab and Nabi scored for Indian Football Association XI.
Dhanarajan led the Black Panthers in 2013/14 I-League season. Under his captaincy Mohammedan Sporting cliched the Durand Cup title after 73 years beating ONGC in the final before winning IFA Shield after 43 years beating Bangladesh’s Sheikh Jamal Dhamondi Club on penalties following an grueling final.
